Challenge
The vessel made contact with the berth structure during an assisted berthing in cross-current. Shell plating was set in over roughly four metres above the loaded waterline, with two frames distorted behind it and coating breached along the full extent. The plating was above the waterline and the cargo operation was not compromised, so the vessel was not in distress; she was, however, unable to sail until class was satisfied, and every hour alongside was accruing against a fixed laycan.

Corvaden response
Corvaden attended within the published response window and carried out damage assessment jointly with the attending class surveyor. The assessment distinguished the set-in plating requiring renewal from adjacent deformation that was within tolerance and did not, which reduced the renewal boundary from the extent first proposed. A repair method was submitted to class the same day, together with a photographic record of the as-found condition taken before any staging was erected.

Execution
Staging was rigged over the side and the damaged plating cropped back to sound material. Two distorted frames were renewed and the shell insert fitted and welded to approved procedure specifications, with ultrasonic testing of the butt welds and magnetic particle testing of the frame connections. Surface preparation and coating reinstatement followed within the worked area. The class surveyor attended for the testing and for final inspection.

Result
Class released the vessel on completion of testing. The documentation pack - as-found photographs, material certificates, welding records and NDT reports - was handed to the owner in a form that could be passed directly to the underwriter without further compilation. The vessel sailed inside her laycan.
