What a quotation includes, and what it does not
The chronic complaint in ship repair is the low quotation followed by variation orders that double the final account. The boundary is published here rather than discovered later.
Scope boundaries
These apply to every Corvaden quotation unless the document says otherwise in writing. Where a specific job varies them, the variation is written into that quotation — not left to be inferred from this page.
Price includes
- Engineering supervision and project management
- Materials to the agreed specification and quantity
- Fabrication, fitting and installation within the agreed scope
- Welding to approved procedure specifications
- Non-destructive testing within the agreed scope
- Staging, access and ventilation for the work described
- Surface preparation and coating reinstatement within worked areas
- Test records, certificates and the documentation pack
Price excludes
- Classification society attendance and fees
- Government, port authority and customs charges
- Agency charges
- Tug, launch and pilotage services
- Hidden damage found outside the agreed scope
- Material beyond the agreed quantity
- Dedicated craft for transport of steel, equipment, consumables or personnel
- Owner-supplied items and any work executed by others
From enquiry to close-out

Enquiry
Vessel, port, scope and urgency. Send the repair specification, the class report and photographs if they exist — scope confirmed against documents is scope that does not change on arrival. Answered within 6 hours.

Survey
Where the scope or the access is uncertain, Corvaden surveys before quoting. A quotation written against a guess helps nobody: it is either padded, or it is the opening bid in a variation order.

Quotation
Defined quantities, defined members, defined tests, defined boundaries. The inclusions and exclusions below apply and are stated in the document itself, not referenced from it.

Mobilisation
Crew, equipment and consumables to the vessel within 48 hours of instruction, subject to port access and visa requirements being satisfiable in that window.
- 05
Execution
Work under permit, with daily progress reported in writing to the owner. Anything found outside the agreed scope is reported, priced and agreed before it is cut — not added to the account afterwards.

Documentation
Photographic record, material certificates, welding records and test reports, compiled as the work proceeds rather than assembled from memory at the end.

Close-out
Handover pack and final account, presented against the agreed scope line by line so that variations are visible rather than buried in a total.
Variations
Steel work opens up. Wastage extends past the frame that was surveyed, a boundary fails a test, a fitting that was to be refitted as found turns out not to be serviceable. This is normal and it is not, by itself, a commercial problem.
It becomes one when it is discovered on the final account. Corvaden reports what has been found, prices it, and obtains agreement before the additional work proceeds. An owner who declines the variation gets the original scope completed and the finding recorded for the next survey.
The same discipline applies to casualty work, where the record also has to satisfy a surveyor and, later, an adjuster.
